Renault Zoe

Renault Zoe

This second iteration of the Zoë concept was a Paris surprise. Although it is billed as a concept, according to design manager Geoff Gardner, the design seen here closely represents the production version of a Modus-sized 5-seater ZE model that's planned to go on sale in 2012.
Although the overall profile is fairly conventional, there's softness in the surfacing that's fresh and gives a friendly, non-threatening character. There's also enough new detailing to make it interesting. For instance, the way the shoulder line sharpens as it runs rearwards into the tail lamp, the scallop in the lower door, and an interesting C-pillar treatment where the concave sweep of the rear window is echoed in the DLO. The front demonstrates the new Renault DRG and a lower grille that has mesmerizing concentric rings. Headlamps feature seven square LEDs, surrounded by a blue ring that switches to white or to orange when the indicator is activated. What's more, there are little marker lamps to provide some animation for the ‘whisker' lines in the front and rear bumper. "The Zoë is a little like a mouse, with small eyes and a sweet little nose, plus a sloping rear, not unlike the old Renault 4CV" admits Gardner, although other designers we spoke to thought it reminded them of a ‘soft' Alfa Romeo.
The white and gray interior continues the soft theme of the exterior with flowing lines and use of blue chrome inserts to frame the IP and door pads. The pebble-like shapes of the seats and the small center console (housing a plant on the showcar) create an ambience of calm, helped by the use of backlighting on some surfaces. Again, the detail design appeals - a lime green dot pattern is used on the IP and air vents, while printed circuit motifs are used on the pedals and floor carpet.

Renault Twizy

Renault Twizy

Renault offered two surprises today at Paris Show: a revised version of the Zoë concept and the production version of the electric Twizy, both originally shown at last year's IAA show. Many people wondered if Renault could translate the Twizy 1+1 electric tandem into a credible production vehicle, but the result seen here today appears very successful.
The biggest change is the use of four 13-inch conventional wheels with 145-section tires rather than enclosed wheels, but the rest of the design manages to retain the essence of the concept theme. The other big area of design change is the front face, where the pixelled information screen has been replaced with a miniature version of the new Laurens van den Acker Renault face, with the lozenge logo sitting in a black recess, surmounted by a pair of simple round lamps.
Happily, the rotating doorbars are retained, with the only modification being the addition a Plexiglass panel in the lower area to provide some protection from puddles, although the upper area remains totally open except for a small fixed wind deflector section at the front. There's no window at the rear but instead a highly-visible oblong slot housing the red taillamps, as on the concept, with the direction indicators mounted lower down in the blue-gray chassis area, as at the front.
The three cars shown were still prototype models with mock-up interior parts but it was clear to see the elliptical IP and minimalist instrumentation. While the driver gets a proper seat and seatbelt, the rear passenger gets a more rudimentary seat pad with a surprisingly low seating position behind the driver.
Finally, a big part of the Twizy marketing will focus on the various graphic treatments available. The three examples were finished in graphic schemes entitled Dot Dot, Circuit and Totem, with a further nine liveries shown on the surrounding displays. The Twizy will go on sale late next year.

Renault DeZir concept

Renault DeZir concept

As the first concept under Laurens van den Acker's stewardship of Renault, the DeZir is the first of six 'stages' (read 'show cars') of reconnecting people with the brand. The DeZir, as the name suggests, is designed to make people 'fall in love'.
Van den Acker's brief to lead exterior designer Yann Jarsalle was simple: design a sensual car, based around the brand's new design language. In a rather obvious, but wholly understandable, move the result is a two-seat sports car with passionate lipstick red coachwork.
"To me, passion is the opposite of creating through lines," explains Jarsalle. "When I started sketching, I wasn't drawing lines, but merely reflections." Indeed, the DeZir, alongside the Jaguar C-X75 concept, marks a resurgence of design through volume. The result is a biomorphic, almost human quality to the voluptuousness of the DeZir's bodyside surfacing, where the search for seductiveness has been most successful.
The polished aluminum side blade (Audi R8 references are unavoidable) either precisely dissects or bludgeons its way through the leading rear fender surface depending on your perspective. Jarsalle sees it as offering a clear representation of the side surfacing, while its metallic finish is a clear visual identifier to its mechanical layout.
This panel's perforations are an unusual graphic treatment that, to some eyes, has the unfortunate appearance of a cheese grater. The recurrence of the perforated graphic in the car's DRG is more successful and offers a welcome derivation from more conventional LED use.
Its interior, accessed through asymmetrically-opening doors, continues the sensuous theme, with a stylized bench seat that appears to float above floor finished in a similar, quilted white (wipe-proof?!) material. The almost clinical aesthetic is literally blown apart by its IP, which splits open to reveal its driver interface and red lighting, which bubbles away beneath the surface of the driver's seat. With all the talk of sensuality, it's hard not to see the floating center console as a direct reference to the female form...
As a marker in the sand for Renault's new design direction, the DeZir offers a refreshingly unaggressive, very human take on the well-trodden sports car path. Its DRG is a direct indication of the next Clio's, while Jarsalle insists a Renault sports car is on the cards.

Renault Megane Coupe Concept

The Renault has chosen the Geneva Motor Show to take the wraps off its Mégane Coupé Concept show car which foreshadows a compact production coupe to be released at a later date. Like New Laguna, it points to an evolution towards more fluid, sportier styling from Renault. Renault Mégane Coupé Concept targets drivers who are not only drawn by the notion of driving pleasure but who also seek to express their personality through their vehicle. Mégane Coupé Concept symbolizes Renault's vision of what a genuine compact sports coupe should deliver, namely character and dynamism, two traits epitomized by the show car's unprecedented door-opening kinematics.

Distinctive looks that exude personality and dynamism
The Renault Mégane Coupé Concept provides a foretaste of the forthcoming Mégane Coupe. "This show car emphatically showcases the evolution at Renault Design. Its squatter proportions and powerful, energetic styling talk directly to the driver's senses; they say 'driving pleasure'.

The four independent tubes that make up the modern rear lights are housed in the bodywork and serve as a further illustration of the dynamic, technological spirit behind Renault Mégane Coupé Concept. Day or night, they form a highly distinctive signature.

The boot, which pulls open and then lifts to minimize vertical travel, echoes the kinematics of the doors which are divided into two sections. The panelled door itself is topped by a separate glazed area and, as they open, the two parts deploy gracefully and elegantly in an independent movement redolent of dragonfly wings. A carbon arm at the rear of the doors connects them to the body structure and the system ensures particularly easy access for passengers.

The cabin:
a compelling extension of the exterior's dynamic voluptuousness.
The interior is redolent of the world of contemporary furniture. The independent, asymmetric front seats, which rise up from the sills, seem to float in midair. Their wafer-like forms express an airy lightness, while their enveloping design is a pledge of comfort and holds the occupants firmly in place. The aperture revealed by the open doors carries over to the front seat shells and the upper part of the two rear seats.

The futuristic, ethereal dashboard features expressive, flowing lines and can be divided into two distinct sections: the red lacquered main structure and black nubuck inserts which can hold small items. This embedded zone houses the sophisticated instrumentation which takes its inspiration from aviator-style watches, including a speedometer which displays the speed in analogue form on the periphery and in digital form in the centre, plus an analogue rev-counter. Both feature black metallic backgrounds with white graphics and red back lighting.

The cabin equipment is modern and intuitive
The different controls have been inspired by the Renault-pioneered Touch Design approach and are both simple and practical.
The four-zone climate control system allows each passenger to select the temperature they prefer using controls housed either side of the dashboard in the case of the front passengers or on the front seat backs for rear occupants.

A show car dedicated to passion and driving pleasure
Renault Mégane Coupé Concept's generous bumper, wide, low grille and alveolar air-intake point to the presence of a high-performance power plant under the bonnet.

Renault Mégane Coupé Concept is a compact, stylish, dynamic coupe which delivers undeniable driving pleasure, while its sporty calling is also expressed by its modern, elegant cabin. This show car, which builds on the trend established by Laguna Coupé Concept, sees Renault take its will to dial genuine passion into its cars yet another step forward.
